I started motocross when i was just 3 years old on a Honda QR50, my dad got me a KX 60 for my sixth birthday and I done my first race at 7 and a half years old. I then went on to race a KX65, KTM65, small wheel YZ85′s, Big Wheel 85′s and now a YZ125/ YZF250. In 2005, I competed in the MRO Superteen championship, then moved to Supermoto, competing in the KTM European Red Bull championship and the Bracken KTM 660 cup in 2006 where i finished 2nd. I then made a huge step up into the European Superstock 600cc championship that runs alongside World SBK. I finished 12th in my first year and competed in it again in 2008 finished 3rd overall. I then raced in the same championship in 2009 with Ten Kate Honda Junior team where I became the World Superstock 600 Champion.
Rider profile: Gino Rea
Prior to 2009, Gino had run for two years in the European Superstock 600 Championship. In 2007 he was part of the Beowulf racing team which then morphed into the StoneBaker squad for 2008. Over the two years Gino finished in twelfth and third place overall, with his best result being a win at Portimao in 2008. The StoneBaker outfit scaled back its operation for 2009 (although Richard Baker gave some financial support and Andrew Stone provided advice on race tactics and bike set-up) so Gino moved to the junior arm of the Dutch Ten Kate team riding a CBR600 Honda. Ten Kate are one of the major teams in the World Superbike paddock, having won the premier class title in 2007, along with an unbroken seven-year run of championship victories in the World Supersport class between 2002 – 2008. However, they had never scooped a European Superstock title – until now!
Another matter to be borne in mind when considering Gino’s achievement this year is that it was generally accepted that the Yamaha R6’s of his rivals had a speed advantage over his Honda. Gino did not win this championship by simply having the fastest bike!
Just after the Portuguese race, Gino was able to secure a test ride aboard the factory World Supersport Yamaha at the same circuit. Gino performed well, lapping within a second of the pace set in Sunday’s Supersport race by winner Eugene Laverty and faster than twice World Supersport Champion Andrew Pitt managed during the race as well.
